How to save money when hiring a skip

How to save money when hiring a skip

Save money when hiring a skip  – Whether you’re finally getting around to your dream kitchen renovation or you’re tackling your annual cupboard clear-out ahead of the busy winter period, skip hire in Wigan is the ideal solution.

It’s one of the most convenient waste disposal methods, and there are many benefits of using a skip for your clean-up needs – from saving you from going to and from the local tip to allowing you to focus on completing your project.

Skip hire can also be one of the most cost-effective options, but if you’re not careful, you could end up paying over the odds – which begs the question:

How do you save money when hiring a skip?

Our experts here at Wigan Skip Hire share some of our top tips in this post.

Choose the right skip size

Choosing the right skip size is extremely important.

If you hire one that’s too small, you’ll likely have to pay for a second or even a third skip to make sure you have enough space for all of your rubbish.

People often find that the container they’ve hired is too big – and while this is better than not having enough room – you’ll still be paying for unnecessary space.

So how do you choose the right size?

Here at Wigan Skip Hire, we have a range of container sizes available for hire, including:

  • 2-cubic yard – this size is ideal for small DIY projects, like bathroom or bedroom renovations, and can hold 4 wheelie bins worth of rubbish.
  • 4-cubic yard – for slightly bigger jobs, this size will be perfect. It can comfortably accommodate up to 8 wheelie bins worth of rubbish.
  • 8-cubic yard – if you expect your project to generate a large amount of waste, this skip size is the one you need. It can hold up to 16 wheelie bins of rubbish, so you won‘t have to worry about running out of room.

If you need assistance with selecting the right skip size for your project, our team is here to help. Get in touch with us today!

Know what you can and can’t dispose of

You might be thinking why this matters – you just toss everything into the container, right?

There’s much more to it than this, though, and there are some items that you won’t be able to dispose of in your hired skip.

These items include (but aren’t limited to):

  • Asbestos and batteries – these items are hazardous and should be dealt with by a professional.
  • Electrical appliances (fridges, freezers, kettles, etc.) – you should take these to your local household waste recycling centre to dispose of them safely or donate them to charity if they’re still in good condition.
  • Chemical, medical and laboratory waste – these items need to be handled with extreme care and, ideally, you should contact a trained professional to take these away for you.
  • Paint – all paint cans you plan on tossing into your skip should be completely empty. Paint is an extremely dangerous chemical substance that can pose adverse health issues. If you have an unused can of paint just sitting there, donate it to a friend or family member.

If you have an item that you’re unsure of, be sure to check with our team before putting it into your skip. Nine times out of ten you’ll be able to toss it right in.

Even after your skip is taken away, you’re still responsible for what’s inside, and if any prohibited items are found, you could receive a fine.

Donate reusable items

If you’ve got a pile of old clothes, toys, books and even old electronics, check them over to see what kind of condition they’re in.

If they’re still in good condition, your local charity shop would be delighted to take them off your hands.

Not only will you be freeing up space in your storage cupboards, but you’ll also be helping someone in need. Talk about good conscience!

Remember – the more you donate, the less waste you’ll need to dispose of, so you’ll be able to save money on a smaller container.

Leave your skip in your garden or driveway

If you have the space, we recommend leaving your hired skip in your garden or driveway.

Road, pavement, driveway – does it really make a difference?

The answer is yes – absolutely!

Leaving your skip on your property wherever possible eliminates the need for a skip hire permit, which will cost you £40 in Wigan.
